Kicking Against the Goads Meaning The phrase “kick against the goads” is a metaphorical expression used in the Bible, particularly in the context of the Apostle Paul’s conversion as described in Acts 26:14. A goad is a long, pointed stick used by farmers to guide or urge oxen to move in the right direction. When an ox kicks against the goad, it only causes itself more pain by resisting the guidance intended to help it.

In the biblical context, Jesus uses this phrase to speak to Paul (then known as Saul), who was persecuting Christians. Jesus is essentially saying that Paul’s resistance to God’s will is futile and harmful to himself, much like an ox that kicks against the goad, causing itself pain.
